CTRLCare Offers ADHD Treatment in New Jersey

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. The condition is defined by inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that affects a person’s ability to function at home and work. If left untreated, ADHD can lead to problems later in life, such as substance abuse or academic failure. For this reason, it’s important that children receive treatment for ADHD early on so they can reach their full academic and professional potential.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a mental health disorder that affects people of all ages. It’s not caused by bad parenting, and it is not something you often can “grow out of.”

ADHD is a disorder of the attention system. It impacts how people with ADHD perceive, think, and feel about themselves and their environment. They may also have problems controlling impulses and regulating emotions.

This neurological condition can make it difficult for children to pay attention and control impulsive behaviors. They may find themselves fidgeting or blurting out answers before questions are finished in class or at home, or sitting quietly—with their attention miles away.

Diagnosing ADHD

As mentioned above, ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder that can affect people from childhood through adulthood. The main symptoms of ADHD are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

  • Inattention: trouble focusing on tasks, making careless mistakes, not seeming to listen when spoken to directly, avoiding tasks requiring sustained mental effort
  • Hyperactivity: excessive running or climbing, leaving seat when remaining seated is expected, feeling restless even though moving around may cause problems in school or with peers
  • Impulsivity: blurting out answers before hearing all the questions, interrupting others while talking without waiting for their turns in conversation

Treating ADHD

ADHD treatment options include medication, therapy, and behavioral therapy. If a child is diagnosed with ADHD, the doctor may recommend that you try medication first. Medication can help control symptoms of ADHD and make it easier to focus at school or at work. Medication isn’t the only option for treating ADHD, though—in some cases, you may find that behavioral therapy works better than medication alone. Here are some of the ways we treat ADHD at our centers:

Behavioral Therapy

Therapy is one way to manage ADHD symptoms by teaching children how to cope with their symptoms on their own without relying on external sources like medication. Behavioral therapies can help kids develop strategies they need to maintain focus while completing tasks, among other things.

  1. In addition to learning more about themselves through therapy sessions with psychologists and social workers who specialize in working with people living with mental illness (like anxiety disorders), those who undergo this type of care will also receive education about managing their condition through healthy lifestyle choices such as dieting programs or regular exercise routines.
  2. Medication is a viable option if you’re looking for a more immediate treatment solution. There are two types of medications that can help manage symptoms of ADHD: stimulants and non-stimulants. Stimulants are the most widely used medication to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, as they have been shown to improve focus and reduce restlessness.
  3. While stimulants are effective, they also come with side effects that can be hard to manage. For this reason, some people may prefer a non-stimulant alternative. This type of medication works by increasing levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain—chemicals that help regulate mood and behavior.

I knew they were the place for me.

When I realized I reached the point I needed a more intensive therapy program, I called around to many places in the Princeton area. While our area is luckily filled with incredible facilities, there is something different about this one. It even seems wrong to call it a facility. The first phone call I had with them already made me feel welcome, and while my need to attend a place like this isn't pleasant, they made the experience so much more human and conversational. Devin

Not just another facility.
