What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes extreme changes in mood. It can be challenging to understand and manage at times, but there are good treatment options available. At CTRLCare Behavioral Health in New Jersey, our experienced providers will help you find the best bipolar disorder treatment plan for you and your family.

Treatment for bipolar disorder involves medications, therapy sessions, and lifestyle changes. Medications treat symptoms like depression or mania by regulating brain chemicals that control moods and energy levels. Therapy sessions are designed to address the root causes of your symptoms so you can learn how best to manage them on your own when therapy is not available or beneficial anymore (like when you’re out in the real world).

The Two Types of Bipolar Disorder

There are two types of bipolar disorder:

  • Bipolar I (type I) is characterized by manic episodes that last for at least seven days, or with a mood that switches between mania and depression.
  • Bipolar II (type II) has hypomania, which is a less severe form of mania. You also experience major depressive episodes in this type of bipolar disorder.

The Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder can be challenging to diagnose because the symptoms are often similar to those of other mental health conditions. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Depression: This is a low mood that lasts for at least two weeks and interferes with your daily life. You may feel sad or hopeless, irritable, tired, and have difficulty focusing on tasks.
  • Mania: This is an elevated mood that causes you to feel very high, energetic, or irritable for at least one week in a row. The person will also exhibit impulsive behavior, such as spending sprees or risky sexual encounters while experiencing mania.

If you have noticed these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, consider reaching out to CTRLCare Behavioral Health to learn how to find support.

The Causes of Bipolar Disorder

One of the common causes of bipolar disorder is genetics. If both your parents or grandparents have a history of bipolar disorder or other mental health disorders, you’re at a higher risk for developing it yourself.

Another potential cause is biological factors like alterations in certain neurotransmitters, which can affect brain chemistry and cause mood changes. Environmental factors like stress, sleep patterns, and circadian rhythms can also contribute to the onset of bipolar disorder symptoms.

I knew they were the place for me.

When I realized I reached the point I needed a more intensive therapy program, I called around to many places in the Princeton area. While our area is luckily filled with incredible facilities, there is something different about this one. It even seems wrong to call it a facility. The first phone call I had with them already made me feel welcome, and while my need to attend a place like this isn't pleasant, they made the experience so much more human and conversational. Devin

Not just another facility.

Treatment for Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder is a serious mental health disorder that can cause dramatic mood swings, from depression to mania. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that approximately 2.6 percent of Americans 18 years or older have bipolar disorder in any one-year period.

Because bipolar disorder involves changes in mood, it affects not only the person who has it but also family members and friends who are close to them. If you are looking for help with your loved one’s bipolar disorder symptoms, we at CTRLCare can provide you with the right tools and support to improve your quality of life at home or work.

Medication plays a key role in treating bipolar disorder because it helps manage severe symptoms like manic episodes and severe depression. Medications may be used alone or combined with therapy treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis

The first step of getting diagnosed is to see a psychiatrist, a medical doctor who specializes in mental health and is able to prescribe medications for bipolar disorder. A psychiatrist may also refer you to other healthcare providers, like psychologists or neurologists.

Your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and family history. The more information you can provide about yourself, the easier it will be for them to come up with a diagnosis that fits your needs. For example, if you have been experiencing depressive episodes during which you feel sad most of the time and lose interest in things that once were enjoyable or pleasurable (anhedonia), this would be consistent with bipolar depression (also known as major depressive disorder).

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

Living with Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a complex mental illness that affects many aspects of a person’s life, including their moods and energy levels. This makes it difficult to manage on your own.

A bipolar disorder treatment center will help you manage your symptoms by providing the tools necessary for success. Without proper care, it’s easy to fall into destructive cycles of depression or mania that could ruin your relationships or even lead to suicide attempts. At CTRLCare Behavioral Health, we work hard to provide our patients with individualized treatment plans tailored specifically to their needs to improve their overall quality of life while reducing the chance of relapse after they leave treatment.

What to Look for in a Bipolar Treatment Center

As you search for a bipolar disorder treatment center, there are several things to look for:

  • Make sure that the center is licensed and accredited by an agency like the Joint Commission or CARF. These agencies inspect centers regularly to ensure that they maintain high standards in care.
  • Look at how long the center has been treating people with mental illnesses like bipolar disorder; if it has only been around for a year or two, this may be too soon to judge whether they offer good care.
  • Make sure that the center offers a variety of treatment options so that you can choose what works best for your needs.
  • Look at whether your family members will be able to receive therapy at this facility as well—some facilities don’t provide therapy sessions specifically tailored toward families of individuals with mental health problems like bipolar disorder.
  • Ask yourself if this facility feels right. Does speaking with staff members there make you feel comfortable? Does their approach seem genuine? Are they willing to answer any questions about their programs or practices? If so, then you may have found yourself a suitable place.
