What is Outpatient Mental Health Treatment?

Starting the journey to mental wellness can feel confusing even before the various kinds of treatment options are considered. There are various kinds of treatment options available, including inpatient treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, family therapy, and group therapy just to name a few. With all these options for mental health treatment out there, it can be hard to choose the option that is best suited for you on your personal wellness journey. This article will explain the benefits of outpatient mental health treatment to examine if it is what’s best for you.

Outpatient mental health treatment is one of the most common forms of mental health treatment. There are a few kinds of outpatient therapy that are available to you. Below are just a few options to consider and some of the benefits associated with each form of treatment.

Intensive Outpatient Therapy, or IOP, typically involves attending treatment 3-5 days a week, logging around 15 hours a week. IOP treatment can include various types of therapy depending on the facility you choose. Some options include group therapy, family therapy, music, art, and expressive therapy, as well as individual sessions. If medication is a part of your treatment most facilities provide medication management services to help find the correct medication and dosages to assist you in your treatment.

Enhanced Outpatient Therapy, or EOP, is a middle ground between IOP and traditional outpatient treatment. EOP typically involves attending treatment 2-3 days a week, logging around 8 hours per week. EOP can include many types of therapy, including group therapy, family therapy, music, art, and expressive therapy, and individual sessions. Medication management is also offered at this level of care. EOP can be a transitional stage between the more rigorous commitment of IOP and the more relaxed commitment of OP.

Traditional Outpatient Therapy, or OP, is the most relaxed commitment of the outpatient treatment options. It typically involves attending treatment about once or twice a week, only logging around 2-3 hours a week. This level of treatment still offers all the various kinds of therapies listed above, including but not limited to group and family therapy, music, art, and expressive therapy, and individual sessions. OP treatment may also come with medication management to assist you on your journey to wellness.

Benefits of Outpatient Mental Health Treatment

Outpatient mental health treatment can offer many benefits to those seeking treatment. Listed below are some of the benefits individuals may get from seeking outpatient mental health treatment.

  • Outpatient therapy encompasses various levels of treatment. Depending on the level of care an individual needs, there are different levels of care available in outpatient treatment. More difficult or intense situations could benefit from Intensive Outpatient Treatment, committing to more days and hours of therapy per week. Less intense situations may benefit from only committing to one day per week. Outpatient treatment usually operates on a ladder-type system, with clients being able to move up or down levels as necessary, depending on what their treatment plan calls for.
  • Minimal life disruptions. Outpatient therapy gives individuals the opportunity to still be able to participate in their normal day-to-day activities. Because therapy only happens a few times or even once per week, you can still go to work or attend schooling around your treatment schedule. Outpatient therapy offers minimal interruption in your daily routine.
  • Mental and overall wellness. The most significant benefit of seeking outpatient treatment is the improvement in quality of life that comes from taking care of your mental and overall wellness. Learning how to manage various mental health disorders and daily struggles is the main benefit of outpatient treatment.

I knew they were the place for me.

When I realized I reached the point I needed a more intensive therapy program, I called around to many places in the Randolph and Morris County area. While our area is luckily filled with incredible facilities, there is something different about this one. It even seems wrong to call it a facility. The first phone call I had with them already made me feel welcome, and while my need to attend a place like this isn't pleasant, they made the experience so much more human and conversational. Devin
