Oppositional Defiance Disorder Treatment Center

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a behavioral and emotional disorder that occurs in children and teens. It can cause serious problems at home, school, and with peers. ODD is often confused with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but they are two different conditions. Children with ODD may act out or disobey adults to get more attention or because they want to control what happens around them, while children with ADHD tend to have trouble focusing on specific tasks at school or home.

the signs

Signs of Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Oppositional defiant disorder symptoms are varied and can include the following:

  • Disobedience to parents or teachers. Children with ODD often refuse to do what they are told, either because they don’t want to or because they see it as an opportunity for attention. They may also argue with adults and challenge their authority.
  • Hitting, pushing, or fighting with others. Children with ODD may be physically aggressive toward other children and even adults. This can cause serious injury, but it’s not uncommon for a child treated for this ODD symptom to become even more physically aggressive later on in life if left untreated (and sometimes even if treated).
  • Destruction of property belonging to others without justification or remorse afterward (e.g., breaking windows). This symptom is seen most commonly among teens diagnosed with ODD who do not get proper help from their parents early on; once these teens reach adulthood without receiving effective treatment, this usually becomes worse until something terrible—such as physical violence against a loved one later in life—happens.

If you’ve noted any of the above in your child, consider reaching out to CTRLCare Behavioral Health, a premier mental health treatment center for adolescents and young adults struggling with mental health and problematic technology use.

Causes and Risk Factors for Oppositional Defiant Disorder

There are a number of factors that may contribute to the development of ODD. These include:

Genetics & Environment

The risk of developing ODD is higher if your parents have it or other mental health conditions. If you have family members who have been diagnosed with ODD, you’re more likely to develop this disorder.

Parenting Style

Parents play an important role in treating oppositional defiant disorder by providing effective guidance and discipline for their children. For example, if a child’s parents are inconsistent about enforcing rules for behavior at home, then the child might behave worse at school or elsewhere because they don’t know what is expected from them.

Family History

If you were adopted as an infant or young child, then it’s possible that your biological parents had oppositional defiant disorder if they did not provide adequate care for your needs during infancy and early childhood. This can affect how well-adjusted you are socially when interacting with others throughout life which could lead to increased stress levels later on down the road.

Treatment for Oppositional Defiance Disorder in New Jersey

The goal of treatment for oppositional defiant disorder is to help the person learn how to manage their behavior and emotions in a healthy way. This can be done through various types of therapy, including:

Individual Psychotherapy or Counseling

During individual counseling, a therapist will help you learn how to get along with other people and deal with problems that may arise. In individual psychotherapy sessions, you might discuss your feelings about yourself and your relationships with others. You’ll also do exercises that teach you how to control your impulses and manage stress effectively.

Family Therapy

Family therapy involves getting all members of an entire family involved in treatment so they can learn how best to communicate with one another and work together as a team instead of against each other (this is especially important for children or adolescents who have ODD). The goal here is not only for each member of the family unit but also for them as individuals because this approach can help them develop healthier relationships outside their immediate surroundings as well, if needed—such as colleagues, friends, or neighbors.

I knew they were the place for me.

When I realized I reached the point I needed a more intensive therapy program, I called around to many places in the Princeton area. While our area is luckily filled with incredible facilities, there is something different about this one. It even seems wrong to call it a facility. The first phone call I had with them already made me feel welcome, and while my need to attend a place like this isn't pleasant, they made the experience so much more human and conversational. Devin

Not just another facility.
